There are several underground utility lines in your yard -from natural gas or water lines to cable and electric wire. So when you’re updating your landscape this spring, make sure you call before you dig to have those lines marked and avoid striking them. Simply call 811 - it’s free and it’s the law.

When calling 811, the operator will request the:

- Address where the digging or excavating will be done (including the county and township)

- Lot number (if it’s a new subdivision or development)

- Directions to the property (including the closest street or intersection)

- Type and extent of work to be done

Within two working days, the utility lines will be marked according to the color codes below:

Electric Power Lines, Cables, Conduit, and Lighting Cables
Gas, Oil, Steam, Petroleum, or Gaseous Material
Communication, Alarm or Signal Lines, Cables, or Conduit
Potable Water
Sewers and Drain Lines
Temporary Survey Markings, Unknown / Unidentified Facilities
Reclaimed Water, Irrigation, and Slurry Lines
