Environmental stewardship is a basic value and belief for Vectren. Having invested more than $410 million in environmental controls over the past decade, Vectren has a strong commitment to ensuring its energy products and services enhance the quality of life within the communities it serves by allowing customers to breathe cleaner air and benefit from the promise of a sustainable future.

Vectren’s electric generation fleet is 100% scrubbed for sulfur dioxide, 90% controlled for nitrogen oxide and filtered for particulate matter and mercury before exiting the stacks. These measures drastically improve the air quality of southwestern Indiana, making Vectren’s generation fleet one of the cleanest in the Midwest. In fact, only 35% of Indiana’s total electric generation is expected to meet all proposed air pollutant limits that will be finalized in 2011 without further significant capital investments – Vectren’s fleet is included in that 35%.

As a result of a 10-year, $20 million contract signed in 2009, Vectren has implemented a unique sustainability project.  Annually, 200,000 tons of coal fly ash, a byproduct of coal-fired electric generation units, is recycled by Holcim’s Geocycle US facility in Ste. Genevieve, Mo., for use in cement manufacturing.  This investment keeps fly ash out of ash ponds and landfills and cuts back on the amount of clay mined for cement manufacturing, ultimately reducing the overall negative impact on the environment.

The use of renewable energy sources is also a sign of Vectren’s commitment. Two Benton County, Ind., wind farms are providing enough energy to power about 15,000 homes annually with a total of 80 megawatts (MW) of wind energy. Additionally, 3.2 MW of landfill gas from the Blackfoot Clean Energy Facility in Winslow, Ind., is also part of Vectren’s electric generation fleet.

Vectren is also committed to providing customers with avenues in which to Live Smart. Vectren’s Conservation Connection program encompasses various initiatives and resources to help customers use less energy and lower their bills. There are four key resources for customers:
