Space Heaters Safety
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) supplemental heating equipment, such as electric and kerosene heaters, is the leading cause of home fires during the months of December, January and February. To help prevent fires and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning from the use of space heaters, adhere to these safety tips as recommended by the NFPA.
Carbon Monoxide Safety
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a toxic gas produced by the incomplete burning of different fuels including gasoline, kerosene, wood, coal, propane, natural gas and fuel oil. High concentrations of CO can cause illness and excessive levels can be fatal. If you suspect CO in your home, get fresh air immediately and call 911. Detecting a Natural Gas Leak
To help you SMELL a leak from a natural gas line or appliance, a familiar odor like rotten eggs is often added to natural gas. Or you might SEE blowing dirt, bubbling water or an unusual area of dead vegetation. A leaking natural gas pipeline might also make a hissing sound you can HEAR. If you suspect a natural gas leak, leave the area. Then, call Vectren Energy Delivery at (800) 227-1376.
