Ensure your gas appliance connectors are safe A flexible gas connector is a corrugated metal tube that is used to attach natural gas appliances to the natural gas pipes in a home. Some older flexible connectors are made of uncoated brass, which can weaken or crack over time. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, this type of connector has not been manufactured in about 20 years, but some still exist in consumers’ homes. The older these connectors get, the more dangerous they become, as the potential for a dangerous gas leak increases. Although not all uncoated connectors have this flaw, it is very difficult to tell which ones do. It is recommended that any uncoated brass connector be replaced immediately with a new plastic-coated or stainless steel connector. Note: The inspection/replacement of natural gas connectors is highly dangerous and should be handled only by a qualified professional plumber, HVAC technician or appliance repair contractor. Moving an appliance, even slightly, can cause the complete failure of one of these older, weakened connectors and possibly result in a deadly fire or explosion. In addition, connectors can wear out from too much moving, bending or corrosion and should be replaced whenever the gas appliance is moved or relocated. Again, only a qualified professional should perform this type of work. Vectren does not endorse any particular product or wholesaler. |
